Blocked Drains in Thornleigh, Cleared Properly

This suburb's history runs through brickworks, a malt works and citrus orchards before it became the commuter suburb it is now, and its housing reflects each stage of that.

Federation and Californian Bungalow homes cluster near the station and Comenarra Parkway, the oldest part of the suburb. Whatever earthenware pipe went in under them originally has had a full century to give out.

That pipe shifts and gaps at the joints as it ages, and once it does, it stops mattering whether the blockage started as roots, silt or just general wear. Something gets in and the flow slows to nothing.

Brick and brick-veneer infill from later decades fills out the rest of the leafy, bushland-edge streets, generally on more resilient pipe, but not immune to the same ground movement affecting everything around it.

Past the original earthenware pipe, we regularly find three other culprits at play.

Each issue traces to the same underlying reality: this suburb's drainage spans generations of pipe standards, and the oldest sections were never built for what they're now carrying.

Brickpit Park, the reclaimed former brick pit off Dartford Road, is a reminder of how much of the surrounding ground was dug up and reshaped before the current streets were laid over it. That kind of disturbed fill doesn't always drain the way undisturbed ground does.

The southern edge of the suburb runs down to the Lane Cove National Park, where the Lane Cove River rises. Blocks that fall toward that bushland boundary shed run-off fast, and the low-side drains catching it are the first to choke when a storm really sets in.

Owner-occupied family houses dominate here, and that tends to mean the same household living with the same plumbing for decades at a time.

That's not a bad thing on its own, but it does mean a slow drain often gets lived with rather than looked at. By the time someone calls, the camera usually finds more going on underground than a simple blockage.
